Surf Memories

Resin, sand, and silver leaf on board 36X60

Original painting by Olena McMurtrey

I am deeply connected to the city by the bay and ocean beach. Many years ago, I took a leap of faith to pursue an art degree from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, and several years ago, I built up the courage to paddle out at the Ocean Beach on my 5’9” board.

Since I started to paint waves, I have surfed less but spent more time at the ocean - learning the movement of the water, breaks, and patterns and planning my new paintings. A journey, as a fluid force, will always transform and change. Every time I finish a seascape, I have the urge to get out on the water, between waves, blending in with nature in a moment of life - to return to the shore with inspiration for my new painting.
